Home based activities
Do I need an approval?
Depending on what you do, your home based business may impact your neighbours. That is why the planning scheme has different rules depending on the activity. Contact Council to find out if a planning approval is required for your business.
If you want to display an advertising sign for your home business, you may need an approval from Council.
No Local Law Licence is required however you should check with Council that your Home Based Activity (HBA) is acceptable under Councils Planning Scheme and has the relevant Development Approval if required. For more information visit Planning and Development Online or view our Home Based Business Fact Sheet.
You are required to check with Council that your home based activity is acceptable under Councils planning scheme and hasyes the relevant development approval if required.
Depending on the nature of your business you may require other approvals from Council eg Personal Appearance Services, Food preparation etc (see below).
Check if your Home Based Activity is self assessable. If you meet the self assessment checklist, you are not required to submit a development application to Council.
If your Home Based Activity is not self assessable, it may be Code Assessable. Code Assessable activities require an Integrated Development Assessment System (IDAS) application with Council.
If your Home Based Activity is beyond the criteria for Code Assessable, you will need to contact Council for further information on an Impact Assessment IDAS application.
